Diocesan Bishop Degraded To Auxiliary Bishop

Steubenville’s Bishop Jeffrey Montforton, 60, was appointed on September 28 as an auxiliary bishop of Detroit Archdiocese.

Monforton was ordained a priest in Detroit in 1994. A year ago, he announced a possible merger of Steubenville and Columbus dioceses. After a clergy revolt, the merger appeared to be shelved. Steubenville is known for its conservative Franciscan University (3,000 students).

PillarCatholic.com reports that there have been financial problems and mismanagement. In 2020, a former vicar general was convicted of embezzling of hundreds of thousands of diocesan funds.

Correct - and a real loss - FUS has a wonderful group of young people who supported the weekly TLM - and who had put together a great schola group to support the weekly TLM. This has been a real loss for the student body and others in the Steubenville area who supported the TLM at FUS.

What a come down. I hope he was a liberal, and not a good orthodox/conservative Bishop Bergoglio just wanted to punish.
