Another Francis Appointment Ends in Disaster

Francis has named retired Cardinal Montenegro, 77, as administrator of the Greek Catholic eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi Eparchy, Sicily.

• Archbishop Giorgio Gallaro, 75, a Novus Ordo Italo-American who was appointed to Piana in 2015, is retiring.

• In 2020, Francis promoted Gallaro to secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

• Gallaro angered his faithful by introducing Italian into the liturgy, manipulating the rite, avoiding dialogue (= “synodalism”), and attempting to merge all the Greek Catholic eparchies in Italy into a single diocese.

• The faithful even demonstrated under the bishop's house.
