Relic of the True Cross.
"O blessed cross, which alone was found worthy to bear the King of heaven and the Lord! Alleluia." This splendid 12th-century Stavelot Triptych (from the Abbey of Stavelot in Belgium) houses relics of the true Cross, and it is one of the outstanding masterpieces of medieval goldsmithing, incorporating champlevé enamel, silver, and precious stones in a deluxe setting. It is now in the Morgan Library in New York. The enamelled medallions around the central relic show the finding and miracles of the true Cross in Jerusalem by the Empress Helena. Today, 14th September, is the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
