The number of Germans leaving the Catholic church as much as tripled in October. Trust among followers has plummeted after a major financial scandal, experts said on Thursday.
The trend is, experts said, linked to the “bling Bishop” scandal, in which Catholic Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was found to have spent millions of euros of church money on his own private house – including hundreds of thousands on cupboards alone.
Church officials are calling it the “Tebartz-effect”, with dioceses across the country reporting receiving letters from congregation members saying that they had lost faith in the church's handling of its finances.
When a person leaves the church, they become exempt from church tax which is levied by the government.
A full, 65 percent of German Catholics consider their church less, or not at all, trustworthy, according to pollsters Forsa who recently conducted a survey.

Just because a person unenrolls at the council offices just to avoid the church tax, does that mean they are abandoning the Faith? Maybe they are just avoiding the tax. Isn't that far more likely?

Gone are the days when a Catholic could raise their children, in the Faith of our Forefathers, without concern that some Bishop or nun or priest will tell them that the church no-longer believes those things. {Priests saying Hell might be empty} Popes that send mixed messages, that sow confusion, and discord.
The world has always been a minefield, but now so is the Church. Catholics according to this article are leaving the Church in droves in Germany over finacial mistrust...hmnn I have heard from from friends, that have family over there:That the finacial problem does not compare with the doctrinal problems.
I know people that are looking for the Catholic Faith where they believe it is still purely taught and practiced {the SSPX} I am not giving them a plug, just stating facts. Many American Bishops still persecute the Traditional Latin Mass, and those that embrace the theology of the pre conciliar church. Many dioceses, that are still run/assisted by modernist/feminist nuns still persecute straight Males with vocations to the priesthood, while they promote a female clerical life.
Many other Catholics just don't believe anymore, and frankly the message out of Rome,SEEMS to be ; Don't dwell to much on it,being nominal is just fine.you will make it in the end. Verily Lord we suffer, and only your Mercy, and Grace can carry us through these dark days.
