Cardinal Rouco Varela: No Excessive Regulations for Roman Rite Catholics
Furthermore, he called for “understanding for those who wish to attend the older rite” and for “respect for the freedom of the faithful within the communion of the Church” - that is, “not by imposing excessive regulations.”
He described Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum (July 7, 2007) as “a very understanding and balanced measure, and I think it was a good one.” He added: “In Madrid there is still a church where the traditional rite is celebrated.”
German Bishops Acting Against the Church
On the German Synodal Way, Cardinal Rouco Varela said that “canon law has been stretched beyond its limits” and warned that the situation “affects the fundamental aspects of the faith.”
If the planned synodal committee in Germany were to function as “a body exercising authority within the Church, then it runs contrary to the Church's divine constitution.” “In that case, it is acting against the Church.”
