His reasoning was that if Mary were sinless (and free from original sin), then Jesus would not be the Savior of all people. Mary would then have had no need of salvation. Thomas Aquinas did have the humility to say that he would submit to the judgment of the Church if it decided that Mary was the Immaculate Conception (a term that Thomas did not yet know), which the Church did in 1854 (but by then Thomas Aquinas was already in heaven).
