One has to be aware of the error of Cushingism when reading Vatican Council II.Even Traditionalists are making this mistake. They are interpreting the Council with a false premise. The communities of Fr.Leonard Feeney like the Society of St.Pius X(SSPX) are making this error. Even the sedevacantist Most Holy Family Monastery on their website reject the baptism of desire but their concept of the baptism of desire is explicit. They reject it since they think it would contradict the dogma.

They cannot still conceive of implicit baptism of desire being in accord with the literal interpretation of the dogma on salvation by Fr.Leonard Feeney.

There are so many dead wood statements placed in Vatican Council II which imply we can see the dead now saved in Heaven ( or on earth!) or that we know who will be saved in invincible ignorance, seeds of the word imperfect communion with the Church, good and holy things in other religions etc.

Those who read the Council with the eyes Cardinal Richard Cushing and the Jesuits at Boston, must finally say that Vatican Council II ' is a mystery'. ' so many things don't make sense', 'it is not rational', 'its contradictory', 'how can something be, for example A, and at the same time not be A', Vatican Council II contradicts the Principle of Non Contradiction. It says yes and no at the same time.

If the Council is interpreted with Feeneyism i.e there are no exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus in Vatican Council II, then there is no mystery. The Council isnot contradictory, it has the hermeneutic of continuity, it is rational and does not violate the Principle of Non Contradiction. It makes sense. It is traditional.

So when we read Vatican Council II we have to distinguish between in principle and de facto statements.Cushingism, assumes in principle statements, accepted as possibilities, are explicitly known and visible to us in the present times.

Those saved with the seeds of (AG 11) are a possibility, accepted in principle as being known to God. Cushingism assumes these cases are personally known and so areexceptions to all needing faith and baptisms for salvation (AG 11)

Ad Gentes 7 says all need to convert to Christ, Cushingism responds negatively. It says not all need to convert but only those who know Jesus Christ and the Church and who are not in invincible ignorance.

All need to enter the Church for salvation!- and only God will decide who knows and who does not know.Since only God can know!.These cases are accepted in principle as possibilities by us, Catholics, they are not known in reality. So Fr.Leonard Feeney was correct. There are no known exceptions. If there are no known exceptions for us then there are no unknown exceptions for us. If there are no known or unknown exceptions for us then there are no exceptions for us!Just possibilities.

In principle it is true only those who know and do not enter are on the way to Hell. In reality we cannot judge or know these cases.

This is the deadwood and confusion created by Cushingism which assumes the dead for us, who are now alive in Heaven and are saved, are visible to us ,; a known reality and that we can judge and know these cases.

Traditionalists and liberals do not distinguish between Cushingism and Feeneyism when interpreting Vatican Council II. Even the communities of Fr.Leonard Feeney do not make this distinction and use the Cushing model.
So the Council comes across as a mystery, irrational and contradictory. The fault is not in the Council but in the irrational interpretation of the Council using Cushingism.

This has been my experience. One is either a Feeneyite or a Cushingite in the interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, Vatican Council II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Cushingism is irrational and something new added to the Deposit of the Faith.Feeneyism is traditional and does not claim that we can see the dead on earth saved with the baptism of desire and who are supposedly visible exceptions to the need for all to convert visibly into the Cathoic Chruch in 2016.

A Feeneyite is in prefect agreement with Vatican Council II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church -without the Cushing error of being able to see the dead.

Pope Benedict,Archbishop Gerhard Muller , the SSPX bishops and priests ,the sedevacantists(CMRI,MHFM) and Pontifical Univferity professors are Cushingites.

Pope Francis was a Feenyite when he said that we cannot find Jesus outside the Church. He also cited St.Ignatius of Loyola , a Feeneyite.
However he was a Cushingite in the last joint encyclical with Pope Benedict , when he stated Christians (Protestants and Orthodox Christians) have ecclesial faith.

Cushingism is heresy since it rejects the thrice defined dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, it changes the Nicence Creed to 'I believe in three known baptisms for the forgiveness of sin' and it rejects the Athanasius Creed with the new understanding,'Outside the the Church there is known salvation'.

It changes the Catholic teaching on morals by assuming that 'deliberate consent' and 'full knowledge ' are factors in rejecting and identifying mortal sin in general.

At the Angelicum they teach that the baptism of desire is a hypothetical case and is explicit in 2016. You may appreciate this but do not expect the same from me.
EWTN and Catholic Answers interpret Vatican Council II with an irrational premise and conclusion. This irrationality is at the basis of their new theology, which contradicts the Principle of Non Contradiction. This is not for me!
All of them are a rupture with the 16th century missionaries interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. This was confirmed recently by Pope Benedict, for those who did not know it.

No Catholic is under the obligation to accept a lie and an irrationality which contradicts the philosophical principles taught to Catholic seminarians over the centuries.

These statements are consistent with the understanding of the Church contained in the documents of Vatican II, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as explaining why the rigorist position of Fr. If present day Rome assumes invisible cases are invisible and then infers that these 'visible cases' are visible exceptions to the pre-Council of Trent's interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus (EENS),then it has to be rejected.Invisible cases cannot be assumed to be visible .
Secondly the magisterium of today must not contradict the magisterium of the past.It means someone is in error in the past or the present.

So when the present magisterium and the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 says not everyone needs to be incorporated into the Church as a member it is irrational, non traditional and heretical.
I choose to affirm the centuries old interpretation of the magisterium on EENS.
I also choose to affirm Vatican Council II in accord with the centuries old interpretation of the magisterium on EENS, without using the irrational premise and conclusion i.e without assuming imaginary cases are visible in 2016.
I am affirming the consistent magisterium of the Church and also Vatican Council II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, interpreted rationally.

The present magisterium with the error of subjectivism is saying that there are practical exceptions to salvation theology and that we subjectively can see or know a baptism of desire case, which would be an explicit exception to traditional EENS.
Also in Amoris Laetita the present magisterium with the error of subjectivism is saying that there are practical exceptions to moral theology and that we subjectively can see or know when a person in manifest mortal sin is not in mortal sin and can be given the Eucharist.

Lionel :
I can affirm extra ecclesiam nulla salus(EENS) according to the 16th century missionaries and the three Church Councils which defined EENS without rejecting invisible for us and known only to God being saved in invincible ignorance.
Secondly, in 2016 I cannot meet or see someone saved in invincible ignorance and without the baptism of water in the Catholic Church, who would be an exception or relevant to the traditional Feeneyite interpretation of extra ecclesiam nulla salus.
All in 2016 need to be card carrying members of the Church, as Fr.Leonard Feeney and the popes and saints taught, and we cannot know of an exception.
If someone allegedly died without the baptism of water in the past he or she cannot be an exception to the dogma in 2016 since it would not be an explicit case. For someone to be an exception, the person would have to exist. 'Zero case's cannot be exceptions to EENS, said the apologist John Martignoni.

So what I am saying here is consistent with Vatican Council II (AG 7, LG 14) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (845,846,1257). It is consistent with hypothetical-for-us LG 16,LG 8, UR 3, NA 2 etc.

I affirm Vatican Council II with the old ecclesiology of the Catechism of St. Pius X.

17 Q. For whom did Jesus Christ die?

A. Jesus Christ died for the salvation of all men, and made satisfaction for all.

18 Q. If Jesus Christ died for the salvation of all men, why are not all men saved?

A. Jesus Christ died for all, but not all are saved, because not all will acknowledge Him; all do not observe His Law; all do not avail themselves of the means of salvation He has left us.

19 Q. To be saved is it enough that Jesus Christ has died for us?

A. No, it is not enough for our salvation that Jesus Christ has died for us; it is also necessary that the fruit of His Passion and death be applied to each one of us, which is accomplished especially by means of the Sacraments instituted for this end by Jesus Christ Himself; and as many either do not receive the Sacraments at all, or do not receive them well, they thus render the death of Jesus Christ useless in their regard.

The Church in Particular

9 Q. State distinctly what is necessary to be a member of the Church?

A. To be a member of the Church it is necessary to be baptised, to believe and profess the teaching of Jesus Christ, to participate in the same Sacraments, and to acknowledge the Pope and the other lawful pastors of the Church.

13 Q. How can the Church of Jesus Christ be distinguished from the numerous societies or sects founded by men, and calling themselves Christian?

A. From the numerous societies or sects founded by men and calling themselves Christian, the Church of Jesus Christ is easily distinguished by four marks: She is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic.

14 Q. Why is the Church called One?

A. The true Church is called One, because her children of all ages and places are united together in the same faith, in the same worship, in the same law; and in participation of the same Sacraments, under the same visible Head, the Roman Pontiff.

15 Q. Can there not be several Churches?

A. No, there cannot be more than one Church; for as there is but one God, one Faith and one Baptism, there is and can be but one true Church.

22 Q. In what does the Soul of the Church consist?

A. The Soul of the Church consists in her internal and spiritual endowments, that is, faith, hope, charity, the gifts of grace and of the Holy Ghost, together with all the heavenly treasures which are hers through the merits of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and of the Saints.

23 Q. In what does the Body of the Church consist?

A. The Body of the Church consists in her external and visible aspect, that is, in the association of her members, in her worship, in her teaching-power and in her external rule and government.

24 Q. To be saved, is it enough to be any sort of member of the Catholic Church?

A. No, to be saved it is not enough to be any sort of member of the Catholic Church; it is necessary to be a living member.

25 Q. Who are the living members of the Church?

A. The living members of the Church are the just, and the just alone, that is, those who are actually in the grace of God.

26 Q. And who are the dead members?

A. The dead members of the Church are the faithful in mortal sin.

27 Q. Can one be saved outside the Catholic, Apostolic and Roman Church?

A. No, no one can be saved outside the Catholic, Apostolic Roman Church, just as no one could be saved from the flood outside the Ark of Noah, which was a figure of the Church.

29 Q. But if a man through no fault of his own is outside the Church, can he be saved?

A. If he is outside the Church through no fault of his, that is, if he is in good faith, and if he has received Baptism, or at least has the implicit desire of Baptism; and if, moreover, he sincerely seeks the truth and does God's will as best he can such a man is indeed separated from the body of the Church, but is united to the soul of the Church and consequently is on the way of salvation

30 Q. Suppose that a man is a member of the Catholic Church, but does not put her teaching into practice, will he be saved?

A. He who is a member of the Catholic Church and does not put her teaching into practice is a dead member, and hence will not be saved; for towards the salvation of an adult not only Baptism and faith are required, but, furthermore, works in keeping with faith.

Those Outside the Communion of Saints
10 Q. Who are they who do not belong to the Communion of Saints?

A. Those who are damned do not belong to the Communion of Saints in the other life; and in this life those who belong neither to the body nor to the soul of the Church, that is, those who are in mortal sin, and who are outside the true Church.

11 Q. Who are they who are outside the true Church?

A. Outside the true Church are: Infidels, Jews, heretics, apostates, schismatics, and the excommunicated.

12 Q. Who are infidels?

A. Infidels are those who have not been baptised and do not believe in Jesus Christ, because they either believe in and worship false gods as idolaters do, or though admitting one true God, they do not believe in the Messiah, neither as already come in the Person of Jesus Christ, nor as to come; for instance, Mohammedans and the like.

13 Q. Who are the Jews?

A. The Jews are those who profess the Law of Moses; have not received baptism; and do not believe in Jesus Christ.

14 Q. Who are heretics?

A. Heretics are those of the baptised who obstinately refuse to believe some truth revealed by God and taught as an article of faith by the Catholic Church; for example, the Arians, the Nestorians and the various sects of Protestants.

Necessity of Baptism and Obligations of the Baptised
16 Q. Is Baptism necessary to salvation?

A. Baptism is absolutely necessary to salvation, for our Lord has expressly said: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God."

17 Q. Can the absence of Baptism be supplied in any other way?

A. The absence of Baptism can be supplied by martyrdom, which is called Baptism of Blood, or by an act of perfect love of God, or of contrition, along with the desire, at least implicit, of Baptism, and this is called Baptism of Desire.

The First Commandment

14 Q. What is heresy?
A. Heresy is a culpable error of the intellect by which some truth of faith is obstinately denied.

The Council of Trent mentions the case of a catechumen who could die with the desire for the baptism of water which he did not visibly received and is saved.Yes we hope so.
However it was understood that this catechumen was a hypothetica case and we cannot personally know any such case. It would only be known to God.
The Council of Trent does not say that this case of the catechumen is explicit or that it is an exception to the dogma EENS.
So every one in 2016 needs to formally enter the Church for salvation according to the dogma EENS, Catechism of the Catholic Church and Vatican Council II(AG 7, LG 14).

The Baptism of Desire refers to invisible cases. This is common sense. If a pope or saint says otherwise it would be wrong.

In the Pope of Vatican I, Pius IX, encyclical Quanto conficiamur moerore of 10 August, 1863 addressed to the Italian bishops, he said:
.
It is known to us and to you that those who are in invincible ignorance of our most holy religion, but who observe carefully the natural law, and the precepts graven by God upon the hearts of all men, and who being disposed to obey God lead an honest and upright life, may, aided by the light of divine grace, attain to eternal life; for God who sees clearly, searches and knows the heart, the disposition, the thoughts and intentions of each, in His supreme mercy and goodness by no means permits that anyone suffer eternal punishment, who has not of his own free will fallen into sin.
.
These statements are consistent with the understanding of the Church contained in the documents of Vatican II, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as explaining why the rigorist position of Fr. Feeney (that all must be actual members of the Catholic Church to be saved) has been condemned by the Magisterium. It is ironic that precisely those who know their obligation to remain united to the Magisterium, and thus on whom this doctrine is morally binding, keep themselves from union with the Roman See on this point.

Here Colin Donovan approved the Eucharist being given to a person in manifest mortal sin and calls it the 'internal forum'.
He also does not affirm the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus but assumes there is salvation outside the Church.
He has replaced Feeneyite extra ecclesiam nulla salus with Cushingite extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

He seems to be rejecting the Church's teaching on faith and morals with 'practical exceptions' which subjectively do not exist but would only be known to God.

Outside The Church There Is No Salvation
The doctrine that "Outside the Church there is no salvation" is one that is constantly misinterpreted by those who won't submit to the Magisterium of the Church.
Lionel: The contemporary magisterium of the Church will not submit to the pre-Council of Trent magisterium.
Instead the two popes and the Vatican Curia interpret the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus using philosophical subjectivism ( visible cases of the baptism of desire). They confuse what is invisible as being visible, subjective as being objective. In this way, with this irrationality, the dogma is discarded and it is replaced with a ' doctrine' (EWTN) or an 'aphorism'(CCC 846).

Faith does not depend upon our ability to reason to the truth but on our humility before the Truth presented to us by those to whom Christ entrusted that task.
Lionel: However the liberal theologians with the support of ecclesiastics have broken away with the traditional, centuries old interpretation of the dogma on exclusive salvation in the Catholic Church. They did this with the use of an irrational premise and conclusion. This is a rebellion
against 'those to whom Christ entrusted that task' over the centuries.

_______________________________

This is why the First Vatican Council taught that it is the task of the Magisterium ALONE to determine and expound the meaning of the Tradition - including "outside the Church no salvation."
Lionel: However there is a problem. For the magisterium after the Council of Trent , the baptism of desire is not a hypothetical case, as if it was over the centuries. Instead it is considered an exception to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. In other words it is explicit for it to be an exception. It is not a hypothetical case. This was the magisterial understanding of the second part of the Letter of the Holy Office 1949.It was referenced in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It has also been approved by Pope Benedict in two theological papers of the International Theological Commission,Vatican.

Concerning this doctrine the Pope of Vatican I, Pius IX, spoke on two different occasions. In an allocution (address to an audience) on December 9th, 1854 he said:
We must hold as of the faith, that out of the Apostolic Roman Church there is no salvation; that she is the only ark of safety, and whosoever is not in her perishes in the deluge; we must also, on the other hand, recognize with certainty that those who are invincible in ignorance of the true religion are not guilty for this in the eyes of the Lord. And who would presume to mark out the limits of this ignorance according to the character and diversity of peoples, countries, minds and the rest?
Lionel: The passage in blue is the Feeneyite, traditional interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. The part in purple refers to a hypothetical case for us human beings. So it is not an exception to the dogma as it was wrongly suggested in the Letter of the Holy Office 1949.However if the passage in purple is considered to be an exception to the dogma on exclusive salvation in the Church then it would be an error.
we must also, on the other hand, recognize with certainty that those who are invincible in ignorance of the true religion are not guilty for this in the eyes of the Lord. And who would presume to mark out the limits of this ignorance according to the character and diversity of peoples, countries, minds and the rest?
This would then be the Cushingite theology, the new theology. It would be a perspective based on an irrational premise ( known cases of persons saved in invincible ignorance and without the baptism of water) and a non traditional conclusion( these known cases of being saved in invincible ignorance are examples of salvation outside the Church and exceptions to the dogma on salvation).

Again, in his encyclical Quanto conficiamur moerore of 10 August, 1863 addressed to the Italian bishops, he said:
It is known to us and to you that those who are in invincible ignorance of our most holy religion, but who observe carefully the natural law, and the precepts graven by God upon the hearts of all men, and who being disposed to obey God lead an honest and upright life, may, aided by the light of divine grace, attain to eternal life; for God who sees clearly, searches and knows the heart, the disposition, the thoughts and intentions of each, in His supreme mercy and goodness by no means permits that anyone suffer eternal punishment, who has not of his own free will fallen into sin.
Lionel: Yes and this refers to a hypothetical case. It is a theoretical possibility. It is said with goodwill and it is speculation. However if it is considered an exception to the dogma on salvation then it is irrational, non traditional, an innovation and heresy. It would be a new theology, Cushingite theology.
__________________________

These statements are consistent with the understanding of the Church contained in the documents of Vatican II,
Lionel: They are consistent with Vatican Council II ( Cushingite). They would not be consistent with Vatican Council II (Feeneyite). For example Lumen Gentium 16 on invincible ignorance would refer to explicit cases in Vatican Council II ( Cushingite). They would be implicit in Vatican Council II ( Feeneyite). It is the same Vatican Council II but with two different conclusions.Vatican Council II (Cushingite) is a break with Tradition. Vatican Council II(Feeneyite) supports Tradition and there would be no change in ecclesiology before and after Vatican Council II.

and the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
Lionel:Similarly there can be an interpretation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with the theology of Cushingism or Feeneyism.(See this blog's tags on Catechism of the Catholic Church, Feeneyism, Right Hand Side Column, Left Hand Side Column,Cushingism etc)

as well as explaining why the rigorist position of Fr. Feeney (that all must be actual members of the Catholic Church to be saved) has been condemned by the Magisterium.
Lionel: The magisterium is using irrational Cushingism as a theology. It is interpreting magisterial documents with the irrational premise and conclusion. Even magisterial document ,like Redemptoris Missio and Dominus Iesus, were written with ambiguous passages based on Cushingism. How can the Holy Spirit guide the Church to teach that there are hypothetical cases which are not hypothetical in the present times? How can the Holy Spirit make an objective error?.How can the Holy Spirit teach that there are known exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, when we cannot know of any exception as human beings? This is all human error contradicting the magisterium of the past. How can the Holy Spirit contradict the magisterium of the past and that too with an irrationality?
