Ethiopia: Orthodox Church Splits

The bishops of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Oromia, the country’s largest and most populous region, have decided to create their own Church.

Largely for nationalist reasons, they had long demanded services in their local language Oromo as opposed to the liturgical language Geʽez.

The central church excommunicated them on February 1. Orthodox Christians make up 40% of Ethiopia's 115 million inhabitants.
