Finnish Homosex Blasphemy Trial: Acquittal!

The Helsinki Court of Appeal has dismissed all charges against Finnish MP and former Interior Minister Päivi Räsänen, and Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola.

Both were charged with “hate speech” for criticising practiced homosexuality. The regime labelled this “incitement against a minority group” in 2021, which falls under the section of the Finnish penal code on “war crimes and crimes against humanity”.

The unanimous verdict confirmed an unanimous acquittal by a district court in March 2022. The prosecution was ordered to pay tens of thousands of euros to cover the defendants' legal costs (4 years of court proceedings, 3 criminal charges, 2 court trials). It could make a final appeal to the Supreme Court.

Blasphemy prosecutor Anu Mantila had claimed that Räsänen's interpretation and opinion on the Bible verses were "criminal” while Räsänen's legal team spoke of a “heresy trial”, which insinuated that Räsänen had “blasphemed against the orthodoxies of the day".
