Nebraska: Fr. Stephen Gutgsell Assassinated
Gutgsell had been pastor of the church St John the Baptist in Fort Calhoun for 11 years. Kierre Williams broke into his presbytery and was later arrested at the crime scene.
The priest was found stabbed at about 5AM and later died in hospital. Sunday Mass was cancelled.
In 2007, Gutgsell pleaded guilty to stealing $127,000 from another parish. He was sentenced to probation, ordered to pay restitution, repented, and was later reassigned.
Interestingly, Father Gutgsell's brother, Father Michael Gutgsell, 74, was arrested in 2021 for stealing thousands of dollars from a retired priest. He pleaded guilty to theft charges last year.
