Since St. Peter didn't have a temporal crown or kingdom as the later popes did, I am sure he is the first Pope chosen by Our Dear Lord Jesus Christ. St. Peter didn't degrade the exterior symbol of the tri-fold papal kingship as these modern popes have.

The first Papal Tiara emeged roughly in the 9th century. So The Church had at least over 800 years of Popes who did not need crowns in order to be rule as Pope... ;-)

No more Tiara's to sell! So began the undermining of the Church's moral authority. Sainthood also became a 'cheap commodity' to that of simple recognition of commitment to the ideals of V2. Contrast Pope Pauls attitude, theology, and behaviour to that of Pope Pius X11. Legitimately it can be asked, "Why was he overlooked for sainthood"?
