The Indonesian parliament passed amendments to the penal code on 6 December that punish sex outside marriage with up to one year in prison.
The law also provides for prison sentences for concubinage. It applies to everyone, thus including tourists on the island of Bali.
The new law will not come into force for three years. The police will only take action if a family member files a complaint. Currently, Indonesia prohibits adultery, but not premarital sex.
The new penal code also punishes "insults" [= criticism] against the president (with up to three years) or against state institutions, as well as the expression of views contrary to state ideology.
The dissemination of "fake news" [= statements that the government does not like] can be punished with up to six years in prison. Similar laws exist in the regimes of the West.
