Former Abbot of Einsiedeln: "I Think Leo XIV Is Capable of Appointing Women as Cardinals"

Former Abbot Martin Werlen of the Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln, Switzerland, would like to see women appointed as cardinals.

He made this statement on Wednesday during a panel discussion at the Salzburg University Weeks, as reported by Katholisch.de.

The time for a "female cardinal" is ripe and should not be delayed any further, he believes.

He hopes, for instance, that Pope Leo XIV will elevate Sister Simona Brambilla, Prefect of the Congregation for the Religious, to the rank of a cardinal.

The former abbot suggests that this was Pope Francis's plan, as he appointed Brambilla as the first woman to head a Vatican Congregation. "I believe Pope Leo is capable of doing the same," he added.

Werlen ist notorious for his anti-Catholic statements.

Can a Former abbot stay Former...until God calls him to account? We’re assuming he’s normal but doesn’t seem so if his crazy pronouncements are any evidence....We’re any of the apostles female? Women have enough of a role in the church if they take it seriously...after the example of Mary the Mother of God.....and the thousands of women saints, but of course the protestors can’t even say “MARY”..
