First Holy Year Performance: Vatican Allows Atheist to Denigrate Saint Bernadette Soubirous as "Stubborn"
Its Italian version will run from January 14 to February 16 at the Vatican-owned Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome.
The production claims to tell the story of Saint Bernadette Soubirous.
However, director Serge Denoncourt, a self-proclaimed atheist, does not stick to historical facts, as he said during a recent press conference according to IlMessaggero.it.
"I am not a believer; the story of 'Saint' Bernadette did not interest me,” he blatantly admitted: "I wanted to tell the story of a stubborn little girl who saw something, but no one believed her."
And: "It's the story of many little girls, little boys, and teenagers who want to believe in something but have no adult to support them. A normal story, a human story - beautiful, one that makes you cry and laugh."
Curia Cardinal Konrad Krajewski is involved in organising the premiere that is reserved for the "poor of Rome".
Italian production manager Fatima Lucarini said cynically that the poor should find "hope" in the atheist's show, because it is emotional.
