US Diocese: Nearly Half of Faithful Disappeared in Five Years
“We see a decrease of nearly 40% in Mass attendance in our diocese in the last five years,” Brooklyn Bishop Robert Brennan wrote to his clergy on November 3.
Sunday Eucharist attendance dropped from 205.502 in 2017 to 124.031 in 2022.
Eucharists in Brooklyn's 175 parishes are presided weekly in 14 different languages and monthly in 26 languages. Brennan speaks of a “unique pastoral challenge” combined with a reduced number of clergy.
He calls for "openness" and "co-operation" with possible changes. In practice this means reducing the number of parishes but not turning away from the failing recipes of the Novus Ordo.
Nor does Brennan consider finding a single language in which all Masses could be celebrated or consulting with Bishop Strickland on how to promote vocations.
