John Paul II Academy: Pro-Homosexual Report of Synod Threatens Catholic Faith
The Academy was founded by former members of the Pontifical Academy for Life. Its letter is signed by president Thomas Ward, vice president Christine de Vollmer, and treasurer Steven Mosher.
However, Cardinal Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, is himself one of the Church’s leading pro-homosexual voices.
The authors warn that the report “touches the very integrity of the Catholic faith.” They argue that its proposed methodological “paradigm shift” implies a view of divine Revelation incompatible with Catholic doctrine, since public Revelation was completed in Christ and closed with the death of the last Apostle.
They add that any suggestion that the Holy Spirit could inspire teachings contrary to perennial doctrine is theological Modernism.
The letter also rejects the idea that Catholic moral teaching can be adapted to current cultural moods: “The moral law, grounded in divine Revelation and natural law, cannot be altered according to social pressures or contemporary sensibilities.”
Pastoral care, the authors insist, cannot be separated from moral truth: “Mercy without truth ceases to be mercy.”
They warn that approaches which appear to normalize or bless relationships contrary to Catholic teaching cause “grave confusion.”
Most alarming, they say, is that the report treats positively the adoption and raising of children by homosexual couples, unions “founded upon depraved sexual acts.”
The Academy concludes that the report comes from ecclesial circles which have for decades sought to revise Catholic teaching on sexuality and family life [circles to which Cardinal Grech himself belongs].
