Card. Heenan (Westminster), replying to one of his flock who wrote to him about the liturgical reforms in Feb 1969: "This was a great test of loyalty to the Holy See. It is idle to blame the hierarchy of this or any other country for what is happening. We have to obey." (via Matthew Hazell)

Can we get a similar letter from Cardinal Nichols about 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑠 𝐶𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑠.

@Lisi Sterndorfer I suspect Cardinal Nichols won't rock the boat too much before his retirement. I expect his successor will be the real hatchet man, where TC is concerned.

This shows how dangerous it can be to have a maximal interpretation of the duty to obey.
Seidenspinner
“We have to obey” was the ecclesiastical equivalent of “I’m just following orders” as people were marched off to whatever horrors were rationalized by that excuse.
John A Cassani
@Seidenspinner Seminarians and religious are actually told, even drilled, that they cannot err if they obey. There is never any discussion of the possibility that one may be faced with illegitimate orders.
