On 19 January 2024, Francis appointed Father Enzo Fortunato, O.F.M. Conv. as "Coordinator of Universal Children's Day and Director of Communications for St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican" (sic).
This nomination, which makes no sense in reality, must be due to Fortunato's background. He is a Conventual like Cardinal Gambetti, the archpriest of St Peter's, and he was director of the press office of the Sacred Convent in Assisi, where Gambetti was superior.
St Peter's certainly doesn't need a "Director of Communications", but Gambetti is known for taking care of his friends, not least by creating jobs for them that nobody needs.
