U.S. Bishop Shuts Down Thriving Latin Masses – One Allowed in Former Protestant Temple

Bishop Michael Martin, 63, of Charlotte, North Carolina, cracked down on the Roman Rite in a May 23 decree. He was appointed in April 2024.

In 2023, his predecessor, Bishop Peter Jugis, requested an extension from the Vatican to "allow" for four parish churches to continue with the Roman Rite. Bishop Jugis abolished the Masses in five other parish churches.

The extension expires this year, writes Bishop Martin: "I am now ready to finish the diocese’s implementation of the norms established in Traditionis Custodes (2021)".

Key phrase: "Effective July 8, 2025, the Traditional Latin Mass will no longer be celebrated at parish churches in the Diocese of Charlotte."

It is estimated that the decree will affect 1,500 Catholics.

Bishop Martin has designated only one chapel in the diocese for the Roman Rite. This is the Freedom Christian Center of Mooresville, a former Protestant temple. The 5,000-square-foot building was purchased by the Diocese of Charlotte and is currently undergoing a $700,000 renovation.

The Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X (FSSPX) operates St Anthony of Padua Chapel in Mount Holly, which is located within the diocese.

What characteristics do all the anti-Latin Mass zealots share? You can see them here...and I can't even see his loafers.

Persecution, of white martyrdom rolls on. Kyrie Eleison

They should tell the bishop to shove it, & continue. They are protected by infallible Papal decree of Quo Primum.

I wish the trad Catholics would totally ignore the unjust order of the bishop and get an independent priest to say the true mass.

We may be at the point of needing secular courts to consider civil rights violations. This is persecution.

Unfortunately, courts are biased.

Louis IX

I know there is no hope in a positive outcome but this cruelty cannot continue. TC must go and yesterday.

salliperson

@Louis IX 💯 absolutely correct. Secular courts may be the answer.

Canon law is the answer, the decree of Quo Primum protects the TLM, but the good priests ignore it for some reason.

A court would throw out a lawsuit against the bishop in a heartbeat; all he would have to do is file a motion to dismiss. Such a lawsuit would last a several weeks at the most before getting dismissed. U.S. courts lack subject matter jurisdiction over internal religious matters.

Louis IX

DJRESQ, use the progressives tactics against them for once. Bog them down with so many suits that they will no longer want to deal with the headache.

DJRESQ

But that poses a problem for both attorneys and litigants. If an attorney files a case that he/she knows has no basis in law or fact, that attorney can be sanctioned under Rule 11. Secondly, who is going to finance such cases, knowing that they cannot possibly prevail? Third, do Catholics really want secular courts ruling on internal Catholic matters that are none of the courts' business? I sure don't.

Louis IX

So just pay pray and obey. What a crock. Who now is willing to pay for improvements to churches, beautification, time , sweat and effort to create beautiful worship for God when some bishop can waltz in and blow it all up? What anti Christian cruelty. What intolerance. I don’t live in that diocese but I can say the sadness was palpable at Mass today for what is being done to our brothers and sisters in Christ. The pope spoke of joy today in his address. If this is joy, count me out.
