Bishop Resigns: Because He Did not Uphold Unforgiveness Beyond the Grave

On March 26th, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop John McAreavey, 69, of Dromore, Ireland. McAreavey was pushed by the media to hand in his resignation.
His crime: As he was supposed to do as a diocesan bishop – and as Jesus Christ, the incarneted Mercy of God, would have done - he officated in 2002 at the funeral of Father Malachy Finnegan who had been accused but never prosecuted for sexual abuse.
Finnegan is described as a “paedophile priest” although the Irish Times called him in March 17 “gay”.
The resignation of Bishop McAreavey is a sign that the New Church now expects her priests and bishops to cultivate hatred and unforgiveness beyond the grave.

Very confusing the news because he who dies in mortal sin a funeral is useless because he is already condemned but now this case is already under the dominion of God www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ire…

Call me jaded, but I am very suspect of the hierarchy in these cases. Think Saginaw, Michigan. It horrifies me as a lifelong Catholic who as a young boy "adored" all things sacerdotal, and was in the seminary in the 1980s, and heard of the abuses taking place. A friend and I were discussing not too long ago about the number of active homosexuals who were in our class (about half) and have either left the priesthood, still in it or got entered into some unnatural union with another man. Seminary rectors, vocation directors and subsequently bishops knowing and promoting perverts. I will never let my children be alone with any adult without myself or my wife present.

ACLumsden: The OT God is the same as the NT God. There is only one God! In fact,it was the younger generation of Catholic parents who put pressure on him to resign. One parish refused to have their children confirmed by him. Also, the Bishop was put under pressure because he concelebrated a high profile Mass with the deceased. The deceased priest had a notorious reputation in the diocese even though he was not prosecuted. It is said that the deceased funeral could have been low profile without the bishop presiding. Btw, Canon Law and Church Tradition does allow for circumstances that a Christian burial be refused. This is a completely separate question to whether someone is forgiven or not. God is the judge. I am not proffering an opinion on the resignation, rather clarifying a few matters concerning the case.

ACLumsden: The younger generations focus on God's mercy and forget that He is also just. When one presumes upon His mercy , he is guilty of presumption, which is the road to hell.

But the Pope didn't have to accept his resignation.

Hmmmmm, but the traditional Irish are like this! They are very rubrical and childish in their understanding of God and His mercy: law above love, their's is an Old Testament god. The younger generations are more loving and those who are Christian, tend to be more balanced these days.
