Bishop Schneider Against Archbishop Viganò – and Vice Versa

Archbishop Carlo Viganò is "unfortunately in schism", Bishop Athanasius Schneider told the 'Confraternity of Our Lady of Fatima' in a March 10 video.

His approach to the Church's crisis is not the true way, MonsignorSchneider believes, because he rejects the authority of the valid Pope as such, accepted by the entire Church and all the cardinals: "It is a very serious act that we cannot accept."

Bishop Schneider added that Monsignor Viganò cannot be compared to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, who always rejected sedevacantism: "Lefebvre criticised the errors of Vatican II, the New Mass and bad examples of the hierarchy, but he never used disrespectful language about the person of the Pope himself."

Monsignor Schneider believes that Viganò's attitude "seems to be driven by anger and lacks a supernatural perspective, which hinders true renewal."

However, Francis is promoting "some ambiguities and errors”, Bishop Schneider admitted.

Archbishop Viganò has attacked Bishop Schneider several times on X.com. The most serious was the disclosure of confidential information in January 2025:

"On the occasion of a conference at the Angelicum in Rome in 2018, Bishop Schneider, who was sitting next to me in the first row, placed in my hands a letter signed by the representative of the Secretariat of State, Archbishop Peña Parra, in which he was peremptorily ordered not to leave the territory of the diocese of Astana, of which he is still auxiliary bishop. And Schneider told me, 'Look what they did to me,'" Viganò wrote.

"What could have caused Bergoglio to revoke that order, so that for years he could travel anywhere? Perhaps the fact that Schneider, despite his muted criticism, recognises Bergoglio as Pope and as such goes to pay his respects at the Vatican?", Monsignor Viganò added.

Bp. Schneider: "I won't follow the Pope into heresy."
AB. Viganó: "I won't follow the antipope into heresy."
Think about it... very... slowly... which one is more Catholic?

It's not my call. The Church authorities have to reach a consensus.
My opinion is Pope Bergoglio is not Catholic.

The Church has always held the Pope as the proximate rule of faith. Thus, a pope, by definition, cannot lead souls into heresy. As THE Vatican Council taught, the See of Peter has never and will never deviate from the Faith. It is contrary to the doctrine of the Church to hold that one who doesn't hold the Catholic Faith can be considered Catholic, let alone Pope. After all, even the 1983 CIC says that the Pope has to be a Catholic.

Mike, your notion there reads humble at first, but it is how Muslims put random-rulings ahead of common sense. Rather, here's how Catholics teach and believe: "A Pope who is a manifest heretic automatically ceases to be pope and head, just as he ceases to be a Christian and a member of the Church."—St. Robert Bellarmine, De Romano Pontifice II.30.

Indeed, Fr. Nix, it is the doctrine of the Catholic Church that to be Catholic one must hold the True Faith. Clearly, the Argentinian does not, nor has he ever, as far as I can tell.

I respect both Archbishop Viganò and Bishop Schneider.
As @jobina has pointed out, the Pope Bergoglio issue is the biggest divide in the Church.
It is nice that two clergy, who are qualified to address the issue, are discussing it.
Their discussion focuses our attention away from Protestant synods, heretical blessings, and other non-Catholic topics.

The biggest divide in the Church appears to be related to this question: Is Francis the pope?!? To say that he is accepted by the entire church is to be wearing blinders. Also, where does it say that sedevacantism is a sin, IN and OF itself. It is not, unless it is a matter of not respecting the authority of the legitimate pope. But....this brings us back to the big "divide" again. And round and round we go. This is a very good time to practise some detachment from everything. Love the true Church, love the Magisterium and Her teachings, and live as Catholic a life as possible. And as Don Dolindo Ruotolo used to say to Jesus: "pensaci Tu!".

"Universal peaceful acceptance" is not part of the Church's Magisterium, and as such, is not guaranteed to be "safe for belief". It is a theological proposition that was discussed by John of St. Thomas, an eminent theologian of the 1600s. John of St. Thomas postulated that, when a claimant to the Chair of Peter was "universally accepted", that would smooth any bumps along the road, including in a potentially invalid election.
Here's the rub: the "universal peaceful acceptance" that John of St. Thomas was referring to meant that the "moral majority" of Catholics held the claimant to be the Supreme Legislator and Proximate Rule of Faith. In other words, when the Pope spoke on matters of faith and morals, it was universally obeyed and considered the case closed. Likewise, on matters of law or discipline, what the Pope said was the final say. There was no question that if a "universally accepted" Pope said contraception was immoral and unacceptable, it would be accepted as final, and dissenters would be seen as schismatic at worst, heterodox at best. None of claimants to Peter's Chair have been universally accepted, by the original definition, since the death of Pius XII. Schneider cannot use "universal peaceful acceptance" as an argument for Bergoglio, because he himself doesn't accept him as a true Pope.

Archbishop Vigano is both intellectually & experientially at a higher level than Bishop Schneider. Vigano has all the qualities needed to make him a great Pope for these extraordinarily difficult and painful times. But, needless to say, that is not going to happen.

Archbishop Vigano is also a standout in courage & fortitude!!!

1. Bergoglio never was lawfully-elected Pope. Therefore, he cannot benefit from the "universal and peaceful acceptance" doctrine that Bp. Schneider refers to.
Why was he not lawfully-elected? Because the law of papal elections, Universi Dominici Gregis, makes it abundantly clear that the reigning Pope must die BEFORE a papal conclave can even be convened. This is said over and over again in UDG.
Why is the "death of the Pope" required? Because UDG says that the conclave comes after the "Vacancy of the Apostolic See." The "Apostolic See" is not only the Pope. UDG and Pastor Bonus explains that the other members of the Apostolic See do not "cease their office" until AFTER the "death of the Pope. Therefore, the Apostolic See is not "legally vacant" until AFTER the Pope dies.
The mere "resignation" of a Pope means that the Cardinals, appointed by the Pope to their curial offices in the "Apostolic See," govern the Church in the absence of the Pope. But these Cardinals, acting in the name of the Apostolic See, operate with very limited powers as UDG explains.
Bergoglio is completely illegitimate as Pope because the 2013 Conclave was illegally called. See Home | Antipope Jorge Mario Bergoglio for more details.
2. If you don't understand the Conclave argument above, then surely any Roman Catholic with a brain can understand that Bergoglio is a "manifest heretic." The Church has always taught that a manifest heretic is not a member of the Roman Catholic Church. This is settled, infallible Church teaching. A person who is not a member of the Roman Catholic Church cannot possibly be the earthly head of that same Church.
3. Vigano is not the one in schism. Schism is the voluntary separation from the True Church with Jesus Christ as its Head. This True Church is the "Mystical Body of Christ." By being a manifest heretic, Bergoglio has voluntarily separated himself from the "Mystical Body of Christ." Bergoglio the the head of a New World Order outfit best known as the "Mystical Body of the Antichrist." Vigano has rightly separated himself from this counterfeit of the True Church of Jesus Christ. Those who continue to maintain "communion" with Bergoglio are the ones who are in true schism from the authentic "Mystical Body of Christ."
4. The Warning is coming very soon. Examine your conscience using a traditional examen, stir up true sorrow for your sins, confess them to a traditionally-ordained priest, determine to avoid those sins in the future, and complete the penance that the priest assigns. Do this very soon. You must prepare yourself for the Warning. The pain will be great for those who are not spiritually prepared.

"The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. " Our Lady of Akita

Unfortunately he’s probably correct in his assessment.

What a shame all this is, two good holy men going against each other. I believe Vigano is right, Jorge is a St Gallen mafia Pope, does that make him a legitimate Pope? I don't know but I do know by their fruits you will know them & let's faces it Jorge's fruits haven't been the best.

Well stated, Bishop Schneider. Although Archbishop Vigano is a good mean in many respects, he is very confused about Pope Francis--one of the worse popes in the history of the Church. Still, he is the pope and no one may judge him but God.
Now if you, Bishop Schneider, can just bring yourself around to condemning the many false and heretical teachings that have grown out of Vatican II you'll be doing much to please God.

Francis is promoting blatant heresy. Vigano recognises this. Sadly Schneider over looks it.

Checked the source on facebook (120 views): Q283 - Is Archbishop Vigano in schism? | …
This news is already days old but nobody sees it unless here...

Sadly, the day will come when bishop Schneider faces the horror of his delusions. Then the question will be: at what cost!

123jussi

I don’t think Bishop Schneider is really worried about facing your judgment

It's not my judgement

Tutti sono comprabili. GRANDISSIMO MONS. VIGANO'

So who is pope? Did Christ leave us orphans?

No, He didn't! Remember the disciples thought He left them after He died on the Cross. But after the death comes Resurrection! Let's remember that as we persevere in our Faith even to the point of martyrdom!
