• Francis’ attempt to punish Burke is an “ugly affair” and an intolerable imitation of the way Latin American dictators deal with their opponents.
• To clean up the mess created by the news, Francis pulled a “new spokesman” out of his hat [= the Francis hagiographer Austen Iverigh].
• The People of God must accept in an act of faith what Iverigh says who has no official authority.
• The unmarried Ivereigh resigned as an adviser to Westminster Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor in 2006, after admitting to two affairs: one in 1989 which resulted in an abortion for which he paid half the cost, and a more recent one which resulted in a miscarriage (Specola, November 30).
• This episode in Francis’ tenure is “terribly sad” and “terribly worrying.”
• Badilla fears the worst of the abysses threatening the Church: to be a lawless institution.
