Pope Francis ditches Latin as official language of Vatican synod

In a break with the past, Pope Francis has decided that Latin will not be the official language of a worldwide gathering of bishops at the Vatican.

A cardinal made the announcement at the start of the first working day of the two-week assembly, known as a synod, where about 200 Roman Catholic bishops from around the world are discussing themes related to the family..

Italian, the lingua franca of the Vatican, would become the synod’s official language, he said.
In past synods, Latin was the official language of documents for the meetings and some of the participants chose to speak in Latin. The pope decided to make the break in order to streamline the proceedings, officials said.

The move was a break with Francis’s predecessor, Pope Benedict, who two years ago started a new Vatican department to promote the study and use of Latin in the Roman Catholic Church and beyond.
When Benedict announced on Feb. 11, 2013 that he was stepping down, the first pope to do so in 600 years, he read a statement in Latin. Only one reporter listening to a live audio feed in the Vatican press room understood what he was saying.

The use of Latin in the Church has greatly diminished since the old-style Latin Mass was phased out more than 40 years ago in favor of local languages.

Latin remains the official language of the universal Church. It is used as the language of reference for translating major documents into modern languages.

When I was taking Latin, years ago in a Catholic Academy, we used to cover our books and put sayings on them...Some of us printed out....."Latin is a dead language, it died across the sea.. it killed the Romans and the Greeks.. and now it's killing me"... (1942)
How well it lapsed over into the 20th century!!!!
GOD BLESS TRADITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!More

True, it doesn't take far to know a hail Mary in Latin is like a needle in to the enemy's head. God bless tradition 👍

As many mystics indicate the devil hates latin. So this step seems to please the enemy of man.

Good point prof. Leonard, let's remember our sweet pope's abdication was in latin and more than half of the bishops attending had to ask who knew latin what was going on.
I remember some while back there was an Eucharistic conference in Rome and the #2 enemy of all time against the Vatican attended (whispering...no is not he SSPX those are #1, It's Fr Grunner) and one of the final summaries was …More

Pope Francis likes to fulfilled prophecies left and right and he just pave way for one to be, not going to mention which one because people here are very sensitive.

But, one thing is for sure, pope Francis is open for his distaste for what is sacred.

@On Guard, what makes you think that the modernizing bishops know Latin that well. The Latin language as the Latin mass are dangerous for Pope Francis as it represents a tradition antedating Vat II.

Francis will do anything to "put down" his predecessor. What makes him think that everyone understands italian?? That is why they have translators. The mafia would do an adequate job of translating!
