Born in **Quito, Ecuador in 1618, Saint Mariana de Jesús de Paredes became known for her extraordinary prayer life, charity, and self-sacrifice. She lived as a laywoman dedicated completely to God and practiced intense devotion, penance, and care for others. She became affectionately known as: “The Lily of Quito” Tradition says she offered her life to God for the protection of her city during times of disaster and illness. Her holiness deeply inspired the people around her, even though she lived a quiet and hidden life. Mariana de Parades y Flores legte bei ihrer Erstkommunion im Alter von sieben Jahren das Gelübde ewiger Keuschheit ab. Als Franziskaner-Terziarin lebte sie ab ihrem zwölften Lebensjahr im Hause ihrer Schwester, widmete sich Werken der Nächstenliebe und wurde ob ihres hohen Einsatzes bekannt als die "Lilie von Quito". Als 1645 in Quito die Pest wütete, ein Vulkanausbruch bevorstand und ein Erdbeben erwartet wurde, betete sie, Gott möge sie bestrafen, aber das Volk verschonen. Tatsächlich starb sie, die Pestepidemie nahm ein Ende, die Naturgewalten hielten still.
