A Bishop Attends Overcrowded Latin Mass

Monsignor Michael Burbidge, 66, the Bishop of Arlington, Virginia, preached at the Latin Mass on 10 March at St Rita's in Alexandria, Virginia.

The Mass was absolutely packed, not just with older people as in the Novus Ordo. The Arlington Latin Mass Society met the Bishop afterwards for a "nice" chat and presented him with a bottle of wine.

In the two neighbouring dioceses of Washington DC and Arlington, thirty sites for the Roman Mass have been reduced to 11 following Francis' rigid Traditionis Custodes (2021).

In Arlington alone, Burbidge has eliminated 13 Mass sites.

The phenomenon of overcrowded Masses was also known in the Soviet Union, where the communist regime allowed the celebration of Holy Mass only in a few churches.

People are mad at him -- maybe they stayed away.

God, open our eyes and ears to see and hear what You see and hear for Your glory.

Point out where in this picture you can fit more people? I see maybe 2 spots.

Nowadays, if you have to sit in the same pew as someone you didn’t come to church with, it seems crowded. Churches used to be packed like sardines; now the average parish church is rarely over a third full.

Times have changed, people are not nearly as comfortable sharing their personal space as in the past.

A “full crowd” would have sufficed to describe the size of the assembly. It was certainly not “packed” by any definition. TRUTH is always the best policy.
