The February 21 meeting at the bishops' headquarters lasted an hour and a half. The Catholics asked for access to all sacraments and funeral ceremonies; the right of priests to celebrate Mass; Catholic catechesis; and the bishops' willingness to accept independent Catholic schools.
The meeting resulted in a wishy-washy memorandum to Reims Bishop Éric de Moulin-Beaufort, the presiding French bishop who didn’t have the grace to turn up.
It proposes to repeat such meetings to "deepen reflection" on how to strengthen "ecclesial communion" between Catholics and diocesan careerists. On the day of the meeting, Francis' latest attack on the Mass was published.
In France, less than 2% of the baptised Catholics are practising. Of those under the age of 40, a quarter (!) attend Mass and are the most fervent group. The bishops cannot afford to lose them, whether Francis likes it or not.
