Swedish Cardinal: German Church Overaged and Secularised

The German Church must “step down from where it is,” Stockholm Cardinal Arborelius, Sweden, told PillarCatholic.com (August 31). It is very involved in state affairs, in social work [paid for by the state and church taxes], in cultural influence and in a large part of society. “But as society becomes more secularised, they too are becoming very secularised.” On paper, there are still many Catholics in Germany but the Eucharists are mainly attended by old people, says Arborelius. He suggests that Germans accept to become smaller, to have less influence, to have less power in society [and to focus on religion], if they want to survive.
