There is always a choice. Many historians have explored the reasons why the German Army continued to fight even when they knew the war was unwinnable. They felt they had no choice and had to desperately continue fighting in the face of an unwinnable situation. The American Confederacy knew before the Civil War that it was unwinnable against the Northern Army. They were out manned and out gunned hundreds to one, but their pride and desperation led them on. Desperate people do desperate things that only prolong needless suffering and death.
