Naïve Cardinal: Politicians - Not Bishops - Should Fight for Mass

The coronavirus has created a new conflict situation, says Cardinal Walter Brandmüller. In order to protect [?] its citizens the "imperial state" wants to prevent them from "giving God what is God's! (kath.net, April 21).

He recalls "bad scenarios from the depths of the past" from Nero and Garibaldi to Hitler: "Christians have resisted all of them to the point of blood."

Brandmüller accuses the "police state", which strikes hard and forces the closure of the churches. He naively asks: "Couldn't more be achieved with an appeal to reason and discipline of free, responsible citizens than by force and violence?"

He would like "the liberals" [meaning: politicians?] to go to the "front" to create an alley for freedom there.

The Church's official stance has been "we must obey the overnment during this emergency." The clergy can blame only themselves for that.

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Romans 13:1-6

Wichita Knight God's perfect will never allows evil tyrants and God does not suspend human's free will. There are limits in obedience to evil tyranny and tyrants in Church teaching, i.e. De rege et regno. Your comment exemplifies interpretation by Scripture alone which usually leads to false conclusions and extreme ends.
