Leo XIV Outlines Consistory: "Preserving Tradition While Open to Legitimate Progress"

Writing on IlGiornale.it, Nico Spuntoni confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has sent his Christmas letter to the cardinals. He thanks them for their support and describes the January 7–8 extraordinary consistory as a moment of communion and shared responsibility.

The letter identifies four topics for discussion at the consistory:
- Renewed evangelisation in light of 'Evangelii Gaudium'.
- The relationship between the universal Church and dioceses, as addressed in 'Praedicate Evangelium'.
- The Synod and synodality as instruments of collaboration with the Roman Pontiff.
- The liturgy: through in-depth theological, historical, and pastoral reflection "in order to retain sound tradition and yet remain open to legitimate progress.” This quotation comes from Sacrosanctum Concilium 23, which sets out general norms for the reform of the Mass.

Spuntoni hopes: 'This passage appears to leave open the possibility of discussion among the cardinals regarding how to address the steadily growing communities of traditionally minded faithful, particularly in countries such as Italy, the United States, and France.'

"Hence, studying more closely the ideas of the Modernists, evolution is described as resulting from the conflict of two forces, one of them tending towards progress, the other towards conservation. The conserving force in the Church is tradition, and tradition is represented by religious authority, and this both by right and in fact; for by right it is in the very nature of authority to protect tradition, and, in fact, for authority, raised as it is above the contingencies of life, feels hardly, or not at all, the spurs of progress. The progressive force, on the contrary, which responds to the inner needs lies in the individual consciences and ferments there - especially in such of them as are in most intimate contact with life. Note here, Venerable Brethren, the appearance already of that most pernicious doctrine which would make of the laity a factor of progress in the Church. Now it is by a species of compromise between the forces of conservation and of progress, that is to say between authority and individual consciences, that changes and advances take place. The individual consciences of some of them act on the collective conscience, which brings pressure to bear on the depositaries of authority, until the latter consent to a compromise, and, the pact being made, authority sees to its maintenance.
With all this in mind, one understands how it is that the Modernists express astonishment when they are reprimanded or punished. What is imputed to them as a fault they regard as a sacred duty"

More double speak by a master of deception.

He means the "tradition" with began at Vatican II - NOT the tradition effusing from the Ancient Faith.

What is legitimate for Prevost is illegitimate for God. And what about the hypocrisy of upholding Tradition?

P. O'B

"in order to retain sound tradition and yet remain open to legitimate progress.” That was the liturgical theme of Vatican II and look what has happened. Darn little of sound tradition remains and the legitimate progress is killing us.

Orthocat

Exactly! The idea that the Church needed "updating" and the citing of "progress" is an indictment of the ancient Faith - that it is 'useless' to the so-called "modern world"!

Two of my problems with Leo XIV are that he seems to believe more in Francis Bergoglio than in the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Apostles.
The second one is that there were only a very small number of Catholic Cardinals at his "election."
I think Francis was not a pope because of a canonical defect in his "election," and Leo has no pontifical infallibility because the ministry of the apostle Peter was not bestowed upon him because of the massive number of fake Cardinals at the last conclave (most of them appointed by Francis).
When I say fake Cardinals, I do not mean it in the way of the heretical and schismatic sedevacantists who reject all of them for erroneous reasons (even Cardinal Brandmüller).
I rather mean it for genuine reasons, such as their tolerance for mortal sin, like homosexuality or the use of contraception. They are rejecting the Revelation of the Son of God.
One cannot be the successor of the Apostles and, at the same time, open the doors of Hell wider and thus prevent many sinners from repenting.
