Francis Is Also an Expert in Politics: "Cursed Be All Private Property"

During his visit to Verona on 18 May, Francis listened to a short speech by João Pedro Stédile, leader of the so-called Landless Workers' Movement (MST - Movimento dos Sem Terra) in Brazil.

The MST has an eclectic ideology, drawing on Marxism, "liberation theology", anarchism and all sorts of things. It is not organised hierarchically. Some MST people have used violence to achieve their goals. In Brazil, 3% of the population own two-thirds of all arable land.

Stédile was part of an event in the Arena of Peace with other "popular movements" and 12,000 people in attendance.

A graduate in economics from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sur, he quoted Bishop Pedro Casaldáliga Plá (+2020), an apostate from the Catholic faith: "Cursed be all fences! Cursed be all private property!"

Stédile also spoke privately with Francis and presented him with the group's red flag, which Francis blessed.

It's not the first time Francis has thanked the MST. In 2020, Francis sent a letter to Stédile saying that 'sharing the products of the earth to help needy families' was a 'sign of the kingdom of God', confusing religion with politics.
