Blessed With Amazing Results

USA

The “Catholics Come Home” program has brought 200,000 American Catholics back to the active practice of their faith, organizers believe. Tom Peterson has worked with various American dioceses to place television ads inviting lapsed Catholics to revisit the Church. He said that the program has “been blessed with amazing results.” The program is timed for Lent or Advent. It has been used extensively by US dioceses, and is being tried in Australia and Poland.

Selective Reduction of Twins

Canada

The “selective reduction” of twins by abortion is on the rise in Canada, according to anecdotal evidence in a recent National Post article. Some parents believe that they are unable to raise twins and therefore choose to abort one of them. “I’m absolutely sure I did the right thing,” said one Ontario mother who killed one of her twins. “I had read some online forums. People were speaking of grieving, feeling a sense of loss. I didn’t feel any of that. Not that I’m a cruel, bitter person. I just didn’t feel I would be able to care for twins in a way that I wanted to.”

Christians Sent Back Into Hell

The 5 were returned to Iraq—at a time when thousands of other Christians are fleeing the country to escape a campaign of violence. UN officials have criticized the Swedish decision.

The Pope’s Choice

Vatican

According to John L Allen, Pope Benedict XVI will name after Christmas a successor to Cardinal Franc Rodé as the head of the Congregation for Religious. Once that job is filled, Benedict will have named 21 of the 25 most senior officials of the Roman curia. According to Allen, the Pope prefers intellectuals and men of culture to career diplomats or church bureaucrats. He prefers intellectuals even when someone’s outlook doesn’t exactly coincide with his own. Allen also notices that his curial appointments are top-heavy with Europeans and North Americans. Finally, the journalist observes that Benedict tends to draw top aides from within his comfort zone. Allen sums up: thinkers, not technocrats; leaders with a Western cultural formation; and team players rather than careerists.
