Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop Shot and Killed

Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell (“Bishop Dave”), 69, of Los Angeles died of a gunshot wound to the torso at 12:57 pm, Saturday, in a room of his home in the 1500 block of Janlu Avenue in Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County.

The location where O’Connell was found is close to St John Vianney Parish where O’Connell was due to take part in a March 4 Eucharistic and Evangelisation event.

Police are investigating the shooting as a “suspicious death.” Interestingly, even before identifying a suspect, police said that there was no threat to the public.

O’Connell was Irish but spent 45 years of his life in Los Angeles. Francis promoted him as a bishop in 2015, presumably because he was primarily involved in social work.
