The Brothers of Saint John, to which Dutch Father Elias Leyds belonged, have confirmed that he died by suicide (StJan.org, 29 January):
"It cannot be denied that Brother Elias himself decided to take his own life," the statement said. This announcement came "after the necessary investigations".
The brothers add that they have "many questions as to why this act took place". They did not say how he was found, whether he had left a message or whether his computer had been examined.
Father Elias will be buried in a church funeral in Oisterwijk.
