Covadonga: Papal Master of Ceremony Celebrates Roman Mass (Photos)

More than 1,600 pilgrims, most of them young, walked 95 kilometres from the Cathedral of Oviedo to the Basilica of Covadonga from 27 to 29 July, including daily Mass in the Roman rite.

Covadonga is the Spanish equivalent of the famous Chartres pilgrimage in France. On Saturday, the Archbishop of Oviedo, Jesús Sanz Montes, blessed the pilgrims in his cathedral.

On Sunday, Monsignor Marco Agostini, Master of Papal Ceremonies and an official of the Vatican Secretariat of State, joined the pilgrimage and assisted at Mass.

This year the Vatican forbade the celebration of the final Mass in the Basilica of Covadonga. Monsignor Agostini celebrated Mass in the camp in the morning.

In the Basilica of Covadonga the Blessed Sacrament was exposed and the Te Deum was sung.

@canonist The organisers did it - surely with the approval of Agostini. I assume that Francis "allowed" this.

@canonist I tend to believe that if the Monsignor offered his participation, he knew exactly what he was 'risking'. So, maybe his cup was full and finally gathered his courage to challenge the dictator dressed in white...?

Whoever posted this article with photos mentioning Msgr. Agostini's name and participation is an idiot. Do you not realize that this publicity could well get him terminated from his position at the Vatican?

@canonist They know very well he was there. It would be impossible to keep his presence and participation a secret from the Vatican. Clearly, he does not fear his detractors, or believes he is immune from their attacks. And, most probably, he received permission from his superiors to attend.

As I wrote, whoever posted pictures of him offering a Mass at the event, and referencing his presence in the article, is an idiot. "Toute verite n'est pas bonne a dire."
