President Kennedy announced on 22 October that the Soviet Union had installed missiles in Cuba.
Two days later, John XXIII made an appeal for peace - supposedly "successful" - to both the American and Soviet ambassadors in Italy.
However, "A Thousand Days. John F. Kennedy in the White House" - the most detailed American account of this crisis by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr, Kennedy's assistant for international policy - does not mention John XXIII.
The USA, which had already tried to invade Cuba in 1961, organised a blockade against the country and the Soviet Union sent ships to help Cuba.
The first sign of de-escalation came on 26 October when the Soviet Union sent the US a letter saying that it would stop its military supplies if the US accepted not to invade Cuba and to withdraw its missiles from Italy and Turkey. The USA agreed without making this public.
Magister resumes that the papal message was insignificant in the Cuban crisis also according to the Russian reports.
