Never too Old to Be a Fool: US Bishop Wants to Marry

Retired Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard has asked Francis for laicisation, he announced November 18.

PillarCatholic.com has learned that Hubbard wants to marry a woman several decades younger than him, wants to be dispensed from celibacy, and has informed the Vatican of his intentions to attempt marriage. Hubbard is 84.

He has admitted to knowingly reassigning abuser priests. In the last years, he was [falsely] accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy in the 1990s, and of abusing a minor on a parish bus in 1975. He has denied both charges.

Hubbard used these allegations as an excuse to stop exercising his priestly ministry although there are no restrictions imposed on him.

During is long reign in Albany (1977-2014), Hubbard was among the most anti-Catholic bishops in the United States. In the late 80s, The Wanderer ran the cover story "Agony in Albany" about Hubbard's diocese. Needless to say that the Vatican never intervened.

“In the case of Bishop Hubbard, it is he alone who voluntarily removed himself from any public celebration of sacraments,” the diocese’s statement said.

A more intelligent ecclesiastic Cardinal Wolsey, Lord Chancellor and Archbishop of England under King Henry VIII didn't ask to be laicized. He just lived with his mistress but never married. I'm not advocating this but only pointing out that not all bishops in the history of the Church have been Saints. They were also very orthodox!

Just the latest foolishness from Howie Hubbard. He always was an airhead. Perhaps there is some satisfaction in his consistency

Has there ever been a bishop who was voluntarily laicized? Until a few years ago, Canon Law didn’t even envision the possibility of a bishop being dismissed, even by a penal process. Now this? The only shock with Hubbard is that he wants to marry a woman.

@John A Cassani -THank you for this good laugh. I was reading thru all the posts until I came to the last line of your post. Very true....I am surprised too. Considering the type of bishops Paul VI, and JPII appointed, as well as now Francis (Benedict XVI at least half/way tried to appoint good men mostly), I expected Hubbard to be wanting to marry his gay lover. A bishop like him however, who was among the worst of a rotten lot during his reign, I would not be surprised if he, and his kind of bishops throughout the Catholic world, have had both male and female lovers.

A bishop James Shannon, auxiliary in St. Paul, was voluntarily laicized in 1968 or so, and soon after married. He dissented from Humanae Vitae, as many did, but he was at least honest enough to leave the Church. He also was upset because of what he saw was the Church's endorsement of the View Nam War. In that he now seems to have been prescient.

@P. O'B That’s interesting. I guess that there were not necessarily specific provisions in the law, but that it has happened. I know that the provisions for laicizing bishops today were written over the last 10-15 years.
