At Least Once: Police Showed Up in Vain to Disperse the Faithful

During the Easter Triduum, Italian policemen raided several Catholic churches:

In Rivarolo Canavese, snitches called the police which raided a Mass attended by a dozen Catholics. All were threatened with a fine.

In Scafati, near Salerno, almost forty people attended an Easter Vigil. Each received a 280 Euros fine and was put under a two weeks house arrest.

In Frosinone, Lazio, the local priest prayed the Stations of the Cross with six attending, among them the vice-mayor. Police found out about this through an Internet live-stream. Charges were filed against the attendees.

In Borgo, near Sanremo, the police raided the local church in vain because the faithful present were only praying privately, which, by law, is not considered a religious event. If the priest had celebrated a silent mass at the high altar, they would have been punished.
