Because they were terrified. They had no way of knowing whether the revolution was real or would last just an hour, followed by a lifetime of persecution for them, their families, and friends.
Ya think so? Or perhaps the East German soldiers were just brain-washed into thinking that their fellow countrymen were "enemies". Hmmm....I'll do with that explanation.
