I contest the presupposition Catholics are even "hung up" in the first place! It's an essential part of our Faith. No one ever suggests Jews and Muslims are "hung up" about not eating pork. Or that minorities are so "hung up" about discrimination. The culture shapers decided those are acceptable areas for strong opinions and thus such questions are never asked.
When someone wants to disparage a view, then it's framed in this context... i.e. there's something inherently wrong, a "hang up" over serious concern about an issue. Gun owners are also often asked why they're "hung up" about just a few common-sense regulations, etc.
