Leo XIV in Turkey: "All Brothers - Despite Different Religions"
Speaking to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the country’s diplomatic corps, Leo XIV praised Turkey’s historic role as a bridge between East and West, at the crossroads of religions and cultures.
He quoted his predecessor, Pope Francis, as saying that the wars ravaging the world today amount to a "third world war fought piecemeal". "We are now experiencing a phase marked by a heightened level of global conflict," he said. "We must not give in to this! The future of humanity is at stake."
Regarding Christians in Turkey, who form only a small minority following the murderous expulsions of the early 20 century, Leo XIV said: "I would like to assure you that Christians, who are part of Turkish identity and embrace it, also wish to contribute positively to the unity of your country."
Furthermore, he addressed the political authorities on the subject of women's role in Turkish society: "Women, in particular, are increasingly placing themselves at the service of your country and its positive influence on the international scene through their studies and active participation in professional, cultural and political life."
In his address, Erdogan said that achieving peace in the region hinges on resolving the Palestinian issue, and he praised the Vatican’s “steadfast stance” on the matter. He added that immediate steps must be taken to strengthen the ceasefire in Gaza and protect civilians.
