Francis published on August 8 a Motu Proprio converting personal prelatures into “public clerical associations of pontifical right with the power to incardinate clerics”.
Opus Dei is the only personal prelature in the Church. It's distinctive feature compared to priestly societies are the so called numeraries, consecrated lay people who belong to the group.
In the future, this people are left out of the canonical structure. According to the new canons, “the laity can dedicate themselves to the apostolic works of the personal prelature; but the form of this organic cooperation and the main duties and rights related to it will be conveniently determined in the statutes”.
Francis thus crashes the legal relationship between the laity and the clerical association Opus Dei. It is a triumph of Cardinal Ghirlanda SJ and mainly his vision of Opus Dei.

As I've said before, if you're going to sup with the devil, use a long spoon. Opus Dei's spoon obviously wasn't long enough. I also recently read they were having issues over their shrine at Torrecuidad: cathcon.blogspot.com/2023/07/opus-dei-shrine-becomes-victim-of.html

This is the utter annihilation of the entire Personal Prelature concept and construct in Canon Law as it was originally envisioned, and the absolute decimation of Opus Dei and it’s founding purpose and charism in one fell swoop. This is additionally unfortunate because many had supposed the Personal Prelature would have been the most logical and feasible juridical mechanism for the Holy See to use in the regularization and reintegration of the SSPX intactly at some point. Now?….oh well.
I respectfully submit that this latest move by bergolio should be lamented. Opus is a cult which rightfully should be disassembled. Regarding the sspx parishioners, this move will head off any ideations that they are part of a religious group other than the Catholic Church.
I hope people are paying attention. Quote: "In the future, this laity is left out of the canonical structure." So much for all are welcome, laity having a seat at the table, yadda, yadda... The hypocrisy reaches to high heaven!!
