Did Pope John XXIII ignore Sacred Scripture and treat the messengers & prophecies of Fatima with contempt?
St. Paul tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:20 - "Do not treat prophecies with contempt." or "Despise not prophecies." In other words, do not despise, scorn, spurn or reject the gifts of prophecy or prophecies [prophetic revelations, the inspired words of instruction or exhortation or warning].
Our Lady of Fatima was fully approved by both the local ordinary of the diocese and the Vatican long before Pope John XXIII in August of 1959 opened the envelopes and read the words Our Lady had spoken as a Secret to the little shepherd children of Fatima on 13 July 1917.
Nevertheless, on 11 October 1962 during his Opening Day Address of the Second Vatican Council in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope John XXIII declared, "We feel we must disagree with those prophets of doom, who are always forecasting disaster, as though the end of the world were at hand." - Solenne apertura del Concilio ecumenico Vaticano II (11 ottobre 1962) | Giovanni XXIII
According to Fr. Malachi Martin (reader of the Third Secret of Fatima & advisor to the Pope), “Pope John XXIII said it [Third Secret] wasn't true; that it was unreliable and the children didn't know what they were talking about, and Lucia didn't because she was illiterate, under 10. So she couldn't know what she was talking about. And so he suppressed the secret.” - 4 May 1998 during his interview on Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell.
Later that same year Fr. Malachi Martin went on to say, “John XXIII echoed that view in the middle of his opening speech on October 11, 1962 in St. Peter's - he derided contemptuously the people he called 'prophets of doom' - and there was no doubt in any of our minds, he was talking about the three prophets of Fatima. He was against that.” - 13 July 1998 during his interview on Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell.
Editor's Note: Pope John XXIII, who read the Third Secret of Fatima and would have had a means of knowing about the coming chastisements, certainly appears to have contempt for the messengers and the Messages of Our Lady in that opening statement. Incidentally, five days after he spoke those words, the Cuban Missile Crisis began on 16 October 1962.
