102-Year-Old Imam Donates $8,000 for Cathedral

Sheikh Osman Sharubutu, 102, Ghana's highly respected Chief Imam, contributed $8,000 towards the construction of a huge interfaith cathedral in Accra.

18% of the population are Muslims, 70% are Christians (13% Catholic). Some Protestants disassociated themselves from the project, claiming that the government was favouring the Catholic Church. Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo is a Presbyterian.

Sharubutu lives in a poor neighbourhood. For his 100th birthday, he attended a Eucharist at Christ the King Church in Accra.

The weird cathedral building costs US$200 million, is funded privately and will serve as a multi-purpose national edifice with a series of chapels, a baptistery, a 5000-seat two-level auditorium, a grand central hall, music school, choir rehearsal, art gallery, shop, multi-use spaces, and Africa’s first Bible Museum and Documentation Centre.

Remember what happened at the Hagia Sophia when a Church belonging to Our God was turned into a Mosque?
