In an article widely diffused in Africa, Thierno Souleymane Barry, a law professor in Conacry, Guinea, proposed Cardinal Robert Sarah, a Guinean, as an “ideal mediator for a political dialogue.”
Guinea is approximately 85% Muslim. For Barry such a dialogue needs “the right horse.” He observes that prelates have played an essential role in consolidating democracy and human rights in their countries.
He lists Kisangani Cardinal Monsengwo (+2021), Congo, Cotonou Cardinal Isidore de Souza (+1999), Benin, and Desmond Tutu, South Africa, and recalls that Sarah, while in Guinea, defended human rights, stood by the people and insisted on the rule of law and therefore possesses the “anointing of unanimity.”
In October 2020, Guinea President Alpha Condé won a third term despite a two-term limit. The opposition alleged fraud. Violent protests erupted across the country.
