Francis Personally Wished to Patronise Nuns

The Vatican instruction Cor orans(May 15) has led to frustration, anger, and bitterness in nunneries, Archabbot Jeremias Schröder of the missionary Benedictines of Sant'Ottilia, Germany, wrote on katholisch.de (December 24).

The instruction forces 4,000 nunneries worldwide to form unions and forswear their independence.

It further allows nuns only after nine years to take perpetual vows. By contrast, the minimum requirement for monks is four years and a half.

For Schröder the instruction is a reason for feeling embarrassed on account of those who prepared it. He adds,

"One could hear in Rome that the selective treatment [of the nuns] was wished 'by another instance' which in court language means the Pope."
