Jerusalem to Receive Monumental Statue of Christ

Franciscan Father Ibrahim Faltas, 60, wants to erect in Jerusalem a statue of Christ. It will be 10 metres high, 7.5 metres wide and weigh 4,400 kilograms.

Father Faltas was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He is the vicar of the Custody of the Holy Land. The statue will crown the roof of the historic Terra Sancta High School in the Christian Quarter of the Old City.

The artwork is made of steel and bronze by the Italian sculptor Alessandro Mutto. It reflects the sun, changing its appearance from dawn to dusk.

The body of Christ is strangely covered by a multitude of figures ascending to heaven. Faltas declined to give details of the cost of the project or the source of the funding.

Francis blessed the artwork on 18 May during a visit to Verona.

The statue is shorter than sky-high versions such as Indonesia's Jesus Buntu Burake (74 metres without base) or the 33-metre statues in Poland (Christ the King), Bolivia (Christ of Peace) or Rio de Janeiro (Christ the Redeemer).

I doubt this project will ever happen. The most conservative orthodox Jews in Jerusalem have become much less tolerant of anything non-Jewish in the last few years, and they are the primary source of the votes needed to keep the current government in office.

If the statue is to be erected on Christian grounds then I see no reason to be overly pessimistic about its acceptance by the Jewish authorities, after all, the Jewish religious leaders are planning the building of their own large religious symbols, such as a new temple.

The Talmudic Zionists and the Mohammedans won’t be too happy.

I wish him lots of luck. I bet it will either be forbidden to be installed, or it will soon be destroyed.
