Heritage officials will intervene to fix the angels at the hermitage Nuestra Señora de El Mirón (1725) in Sorio, Spain. The head of Provincial Heritage Office visited the chapel on Monday and will help the Diocese of Osma-Soria to find a solution.
The interior, including the angels, was until recently plain white. The hermitage was repainted this summer, with the friezes in tile red.
The work was done by a painter, not a conservator. The person responsible dyed the angels' hair and pigmented their eyebrows a dark brown color, as well as their eyes, and painted their lips in an intense red. The former angels now look like monkeys.
The City Council has initiated a sanction file against the Diocese of Osma-Soria, that has already begun the process of repairing the figures.
For the time being, the historic hermitage remains closed.
