US Church Loses 90 Percent of Baptised Catholics
Their study, titled 'Religious Transmission', was published on ChurchLifeJournal.nd.edu on 12 August.
The data show that retention is falling: 84% of those raised Catholic still identified as Catholic in 1973, compared to 74% in 2002 and 62% in 2022.
Practice is declining more rapidly: weekly Mass attendance among those raised Catholic dropped from 34% in 1973 to 20% in 2002 and to 11% in 2022.
The authors conclude that the Church is now losing nine out of ten Catholics who were baptised as children. Many of them become religiously unaffiliated.
The proportion of Americans who say religion is among the most important things has fallen from 72% in 2013 to 53% in 2023.
