Perth: Archbishop Persecutes Latin Mass Priest
On 11 December, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe of Perth "banned" the famous Rev. Michael Rowe from celebrating the Roman Mass and removed him from his long-standing role as rector of the church St Anne in Perth.
Costelloe is a key figure in the controversial Synod on Synodality. Under Rev. Rowe, St Anne has grown from 30 parishioners in 1996 to 850 today.
Costelloe used Traditionis Custodes as a pretext to order those priests who are celebrating Mass to apply for permission to continue to do so. Costelloe claimed that Fr Rowe had allegedly "not complied" with this request.
“As of today’s date, Fr Rowe has not sought my authorisation to celebrate the Mass using the Roman Missal promulgated by Saint John XXIII in 1962,” he wrote.
Rowe is not suspended but should be "forced" to preside at the Eucharist (Novus Ordo).
Mass at the church St Anne will in future be celebrated by a group of different priests. Rev Rowe said in a statement that Costelloe's decree amounted to “personal persecution”. Costelloe had made it “practically impossible for me to meet the conditions to apply for permission.”
Rev. Rowe would have had to sign a statement on the liturgy, issued by Costello, which contained “factual errors.” It claimed things “that I simply do not believe are true.”
St Anne has spent more than a million Australian dollars on improving the land and building of the church.
